jewish holiday cheer

two holiday themed pieces - one I used as a holiday card (the one with the orthodox jews). what inspired me to draw my own people....i may never know. i enjoyed doing this b&w piece.

the other was for the Yellow Bird Project - a charity program based out of Montreal - basically they ask bands and artists to design t-shirts - and then choose a charity that the profits will go to (for that particular shirt).

they asked me to design a holiday website banner for their site - follow the above link to see it!

sleeting and snowing

its a terribly snowy and sleety day here in nyc - i'm lucky enough to be on the 37th floor right in times square - and its very beautiful.

here's a quick little sketchy sketch of a basketball player - based on a photo of steve nash.

in other news, my work was recently accepted into Fontanelle Gallery in Portland, Oregon! My stuff's not up on their site yet - but will be soon.

beer

this illustration was done recently for an article about the additives and chemicals put into various beer products. wouldn't it be fun if these colorful creatures really did live within every bottle of beer?

also, I've made available high-quality prints of my illustration "Tattooman" - which recently got into the Society of Illustrators 51.
simply go to the illustration section of my website - and click on the Paypal "buy now"-button - and the print will be yours!
printed by IO Labs - on Hahnemuhle German Etching 310g/m2 paper.

photoshop face

all drawn in photoshop with mouse only. i guess this is related to yesterday's post- with limited supplies (or technology).
its simple - but i enjoyed making it - although my mouse skills are not quite up to par.

angel love

A quick little piece done in pencil and crayola crayon (believe it or not). I did this one when I didn't have my usual supplies at my disposal. I think its fun to sometimes create something with limited options.

prom

a bit of hand drawn lettering for Worn Magazine up in Canada. The article is a series of photos featuring modern prom fashion - (but don't think cheezy high school style - think more along the lines of hipster - style).

two more

two more collage/drawings. this time i altered some of the colors just using marker straight on the photo itself. these may or may not be submitted to the "Europe by Designers" competition - once i figure out whether I'd be infringing on any copyrights. i'm new to this whole collage thing - so I've never really had to worry about that before!
either way - i am enjoying this process very much!

part 3 SUPERSTARRR

part 3 of this little mini project. i'll be on the lookout for more funny magazine pictures!

terrifying

this is part 2 from the series inspired by old how/print magazines. these two lovely davids were pulled from an old ad for the program "Poser" - which I guess was some dated version of an computerized anatomy book. i'm assuming you could "pose" a 3d model in any which way possible.....and for the advertising they decided it would be a good idea to bastardize michelangelo's david. i was lucky enough to come across two - and used them - as seen below, haha.

charm city roller girls!!!

upcoming poster for the Charm City Roller Girls Season 3 Championship! there was a TON of text i needed to include (as you can see) - and even extra text i needed to add last minute. i had a great time making it though - posters are my favorite thing to draw and design.
also - thank you to IllustrationMundo for featuring my website on their site! check it out.

rumba!!!!

this was inspired by a small 2" x 3" ad i saw in my local newspaper - for an actual club/casino called "rumba" in NJ. so this place actually exists. i just thought all the copy and the people were hilarious. so i did my own version.

two freelance jobs - one for the stranger (about the band 'built to spill') - and one for time out new york (about student id discounts in nyc)

sketching at the Met

spent a day at the metropolitan museum of art - got to see the superhero exhibit (which was excellent, way better than I expected it to be), the turner exhibit, and a really awesome show of Buddhist painted manuscripts.
and of course no visit to the met would be complete without sketching a little bit from the greek and roman sculptures.
this one was my favorite.

roadtrip art

so, i just returned from a very exciting and fun roadtrip to houston with my brother. we stopped in columbus, nashville, new orleans, then houston (of course). i found that a good way to pass the time in the car was the draw on newspaper pictures!
here are two of my favorites.

lunar colonies

this is a cover illustration for a book that is a collection of essays on lunar colonies. type may or may not be placed in the sky, so i left room just in case. this is a pretty hypothetical collection of colonies - but I fact checked with the author to make sure none of the structures were physically impossible. i wanted my illustration to be a departure from the typical technical illustrations done for books like this - and i wanted to focus more on making the colony a place that someone would actually want to live! despite being hostile - it should look inviting!

last judgement

i seem to be on a religious bent with my illustration - or at least for these last two posts. although neither would be very traditional depictions.
both were made with acrylic paint and india ink.

girls

figured i'd draw something i don't usually draw....teenage girls! these were done relatively quickly. i'm going to try and make drawing female faces as exciting as drawing male faces (for me, that is).
coming up are pictures of a new pair of sneakers I painted for my brother's birthday!

derek jeter & taxes

another palette turned into a face (this time, part of the W2 tax form, haha...i didn't even do that intentionally).
then, a portrait of derek jeter. not sure what inspired me - maybe it was the all star game that i didn't watch.
everything is acrylic and india ink.

sketchbook remix

hello all! i thought i'd update with some of the latest stuff from my sketchbook. you'll see i re-visted the acrylic red boy - it was just a little too normal looking for my taste. so i thought it would only be appropriate to add vampire teeth and blood.
then there's another portrait of a very sexy man with a receding hairline, my favorite type.
and finally - i recently bought myself a beautiful book of fra angelico paintings. one of his paintings was the inspiration for this more rendered pencil drawing (something I haven't done in a while). the pose is taken from one of the paintings - face/clothing/and tattoos have been altered! i dont think this piece is too far out of my visual vocabulary - even though it is rendered. I think i've included enough pattern and 2d elements to make it fit with the rest of my portfolio. but maybe i'm not the best judge of that? i may or may not try to add color to this piece in the future.
anyways - enjoy!

hand painted sneakers!

In preparation for the ICON5 Roadshow, I decided to finally buy myself a pair of white sneakers that I could paint on and customize. I've been meaning to do this for a while - so I figured now was the perfect time.
These were originally a completely white pair of Reebok high-tops - and now they are painted on with acrylic. The shoelaces were dyed with acrylic ink.
I had so much fun with this process that I definitely think I'll be making more in the future!
