Slowly going to make the switch to Tumblr

Yes, I finally have given in...or rather...I am going to give it a try and see if I like it. I started up a tumblr a while ago, but now I am going to only post art updates there. If you liked following me here...please follow me now at my Tumblr: http://anabenaroya.tumblr.com

Jetzt

An illustration I did for Jetzt Magazine, based in Germany. The art director asked me to do a modern interpretation of the Greek Goddess, Europa...who had a strange twisted story involving being kidnapped, then raped by Zeus (in the form of a bull).

So...this was the solution we both came up with! :)

Sperry Top-Sider

I had the opportunity to design a banner for a in-store display for Sperry Top-Sider. This was featured in Journeys stores all across the country! As one of my first major advertising jobs - I was/am super excited about this!!

Another one for Businessweek!

Did this piece for Bloomberg Businessweek a little while ago...the story was about whether or not the legalization of marijuana would actually help the economy, as a number of peoeple claim. This article (a book review...so I guess this book) - seemed to think it would NOT help the economy. Probably only the legalization of ALL drugs would help this sort of thing. Good luck with that happening! If you want to read the full story, click here.

Baltimore Citypaper cover

I recently completed this cover for the Bmore Citypaper. The art director really wanted to incorporate photographs into my hand-lettering, something I haven't really done in the past! But I was very happy to experiment and figure out a solution. For this - I printed the photos he provided and photocopied them several times over, to reduce the quality of the image. I then scanned my copies back into the computer, and placed them in my illustration. I'm sure there is some way to get this effect in Photoshop, but I really wanted to get it authentically.

NYT Sunday Review

This little piece was for the NYT's Sunday Review - an article called "What Would Jesus Do? Skinny-Dip". It was about the recent incident where congressman Kevin Yoder went skinny-dipping in the Sea of Galilee in Israel, stirring up great controversy.

The interesting part about this article, is it delves into the history of skinny-dipping in the Sea of Galilee - including rabbis and Jesus himself! So it seems Congressman Yoder was not alone in this practice...though I am sure he was drunkenly unaware of the history at the time.

Lots of new stuff

Here are some projects that I've been working on...I usually never post photos of the actual papers and magazines...so I thought I'd switch things up a bit! First off - I did an Op-Ed piece for The New York Times today! The article was about how the Highline has become a huge tourist attraction, similar to Times Square - and how this is destroying (or has already destroyed) the West Chelsea neighborhood. The author bemoans that New York is slowly becoming only for tourists and the extremely wealthy...less and less "real" New York is left for the rest of us.

Then - a cover for a special edition of the Baltimore Citypaper - their annual College Guide! This one was really fun...and the printing quality was great - on actual magazine paper, not newsprint.

And finally - I've been working on this column for Mental Floss each month. Each month this page shares some quick facts that you may or may not know on a random subject...this month - James Bond!!

And this week has been absolutely crazy with work! Lots of new fun stuff to show you soon :)

Bloomberg Businessweek

Did this illustration for Businessweek last week - the article was about how even though China's economy has been strong all throughout this depression that has affected the rest of the world - even they are starting to feel the effects. Chinese consumers are now being more conscious of how they spend their money - so stores in China are starting to offer sales and discounts, something that never really happend before.

God Bless

This is a mixed media collage I created a little while ago. I found the photograph of the three ladies while on a walk to eat dinner. It was just lying on the ground, so I picked it up and immediately loved it. I saw a bunch of other photographs had been blown into a small park nearby, but unfortunately the gates to the park were locked and I couldn't get in. I wish I could have seen what other photos went with this one...it would have made a great collection.

On the back of the photo, "1983" was hand-written. I don't know why but the women in this photo really had an emotional effect on me. There is something incredibly sad about this photo, though I can't put my finger on it.

Eventually I figured out what I wanted to do with it - and I created this Americana-type collage. I hope you enjoy it.

3 AM

I did these pieces for an upcoming show featuring Jersey artists. The theme behind the show is "sloth" - so the curator and I came up with the concept for showing a fully populated party scene...one that has gone on till early in the morning. To me, when it becomes so late at night, reality and subconscious thoughts get very blurred. Real life and what goes on in your head almost become one. I really enjoyed making this piece, it has been a while since I dedicated this much time and effort into something personal. The three pieces actually connect to make one scene - unfortunately you can't clearly see that in blogger! But maybe you'll be able to see the connection after looking through them all.

drawing at the met

I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art yesterday just to relax and draw a bit...drawing Greek & Roman sculpture has always been something I love to do. No matter how crazy and expressive some of my drawings get, I always get urges to go to the museum and draw from life.

The Day the Earth Threw Up

I don't know why but I got inspired to write a little cute story to accompany this illustration. Enjoy!
Hello little french fry, sitting on the floor.
Hello soda pop, rolling down the street.
Hello toxic waste, swimming in the river.
Hello plastic bag, swinging on the branches.
Hello all you cars, waiting on the highway.
Hello lumberjacks, chipping and chopping trees.

Hello little ocean, how are you feeling?
Hello little forest, how is your day?
Hello little beach, how is it going?

Hello little Earth, tell me, what's the matter?
Hello little Earth, are you feeling sick?

We're sorry, little Earth, we promise we'll do better!
